VoIP gateways and ATAs: start with the telephone interface
A VoIP gateway connects telephone equipment or a telephone line to packet-based voice service. An analogue telephone adapter, usually shortened to ATA, is one way to connect an analogue phone to an IP voice system.
Identify what the port connects
An FXS port supplies an analogue telephone with line power, dial tone and ringing. An FXO port receives an outside analogue line. A gateway with the wrong electrical role cannot be chosen merely because its connector looks familiar. Confirm the exact port functions in the equipment documentation.
Test the complete voice path
Check registration or call routing, incoming and outgoing calls, two-way audio, caller identification where required, and clean call release. Test keypad tones separately: a voice codec may not preserve them reliably, so the system may need a supported telephone-event method.
Agree power-failure and emergency-call behaviour with the service owner. Acceptance applies to the tested adapter, software configuration and connected service, not to every device sold under the same category name.
