Motorola proposes indoor 3G access point
On 2 February 2006, Motorola described the AXPT, a proposed indoor mobile access point aimed at a familiar early-3G weakness: poor reception within buildings. The company expected to show the equipment at the following month’s 3GSM event in Barcelona.
Indoor coverage as the target
The device was intended to use HSDPA, a 3G enhancement then associated with laboratory speeds above 3 Mbps. Motorola positioned it for enterprises and mobile workers seeking more consistent service indoors, where tests of earlier data cards had exposed coverage difficulties.
Deployment was not automatic
The source also records analyst caution. An operator would need a building owner’s consent, installation and ongoing maintenance arrangements, and a plan for coverage across a whole site. Pricing was not yet available. The report concerns a product proposal and market expectation in 2006, not a current offering. The source did not say that the product had entered commercial deployment.
