IEEE draft moves 802 point 11n forward
On 3 February 2006, the IEEE 802.11n task group approved a first draft of the next Wi-Fi standard. The unanimous vote was an important procedural step, but the source made clear that revisions and final ratification were still ahead.
Multiple antennas, higher potential
The draft used MIMO techniques, allowing multiple antennas and data streams to improve throughput and range. It was described as a successor to 802.11g with compatibility for older 802.11a, b and g equipment at their lower speeds.
Draft products needed caution
Broadcom announced draft-compatible chips immediately and said firmware could accommodate later changes. Such compatibility claims were not the same as guaranteed interoperability across vendors. The useful distinction in 2006 was between a promising draft, early products and final certification after the standard was settled. The vote therefore marked progress in specification work rather than the arrival of a final standard.
