New phones highlight the push for VoIP providers to move aggressively into more popular consumer markets, especially wireless. The new D-Link DPH-540 WiFi Phone is designed to look a lot like a folding 'flip-phone' mobile phone even though it connects via WiFi networks to a VoIP service. The DPH-540 is based on the SIP protocol so it will work with any VoIP provider that uses SIP to implement its service. Notably that does NOT include Skype. The phone is also ready for the forthcoming Public SIP Telephone Network (PsipTN) standard and will require a simple firmware upgrade once the standard is in operation. The PsipTN standard should make it easier to make public SIP-based calls over larger scale and municipal WiFI networks. "We are pleased to announce immediate availability of the D-Link Wi-Fi Phone to the thousands of consumers and business customers that have been anxiously awaiting the product since we demonstrated a prototype at the VON show this past spring," said Steven Joe, president and CEO of D-Link Systems, Inc. "Our phone is truly a first of its kind in both design and functionality, and the potential cost savings to be realized from this type of device are astounding. This product will act as a flagship for D-Link in this key emerging market, complimenting our popular wireless networking and VoIP telephony solutions." The phone weighs 3.75 ounces and has a color display, can store 100 phone numbers and provides Caller ID support, polyphonic ringtones, volume, redial, mute, hold and even text messaging functions. Talk time is reported to be about 3 hours with a standby time of 70 hours. VoIP specific call features include echo cancellation, packet delay compensation and lost packet recovery, all features to improve VoIP call quality. The phone is available in silver or black for a suggested price of $250. Zultys Technologies has also announced a family of new SIP phones. All four feature full SIP compatability with call-quality features. They all include a full duplex speakerphone as well as headset jacks to allow them to use standard headsets. They all also support up to four lines to handle four seperate calls or five-way conferencing managed from the phone. The Zultys phones all include management and option control from a web browser. The ZIP 4x4L and the ZIP 4x5L phones both have monochrome displays. While the 4x4L is otherwise a standard office phone, the ZIP 4x5L and ZIP 4x5B are designed for the remote worker because it includes a complete router with VPN, NAT, firewall, and DHCP server. This phone also has an analog port to provide local PSTN telephony service allowing a remote worker to publish a local phone number and dial emergency numbers. The ZIP 4x4B and ZIP 4x5B have graphical color LCDs, a USB port, and Bluetooth to support wireless headsets. “We have invested heavily in acoustic testing and are certain that these phones sound better than anything on the market today,” said Patrick Ferriter, VP of Product Marketing at Zultys. “Zultys is definitely in the phone business and will stay ahead of our competitors in this space.” All four phones will be available globally within four to ten weeks.
