Arriving in Vietnam: money, taxis and a phone that stays useful

A smooth Vietnam arrival depends on a small chain of practical decisions: how you will pay for the first journey, where your driver expects you, and which phone line will carry data. Build that chain before departure. An app appearing in an airport guide does not prove that your account, overseas number or particular card will work. Keep a usable alternative that does not depend on completing registration beside the arrivals door.

Start with the transfer you actually need

If a tour or hotel transfer is already booked, preserve its voucher, meeting instructions and contact details offline. Do not replace it with a taxi merely because a ride-hailing service exists. Da Nang airport tells coach passengers to follow their guide and use the information desk if they become separated. That makes the desk a sensible first recovery point, rather than accepting a new offer from an unidentified driver.

For an independent Da Nang arrival, the airport-listed staffed taxi stands provide a documented option. For either coastal base, ask the accommodation or arranging operator before departure whether it can confirm a car for your arrival. Treat an app ride as an optional, unverified choice, not the only plan. Record the exact accommodation address, not just its marketing name: a city hotel and a coastal resort can mean different destinations.

Exchange for the amount you will receive

Vietnam uses the dong, abbreviated VND by the State Bank of Vietnam. Use a bank counter or an exchange business that can show its authorization. Before handing over notes, ask whether that counter buys your actual currency and note type, what identification it requires, and what amount of dong you will receive after charges. Availability is not established by a currency appearing in a website dropdown.

Vietcombank separates cash buying, telegraphic buying and selling in its converter and labels the information reference-only. If you bring foreign banknotes to obtain dong, compare the applicable cash-buying offer, not an unrelated transfer rate. Ask for the complete net amount, count the money at the counter and retain the receipt. This guide does not quote a live rate or identify a universally best airport kiosk.

Compare VND with the currency you carry: use the dated snapshot for reference, then enter the counter’s confirmed rate and fee. Calculate the net cash received, not a promise of card acceptance.

Keep cash useful without treating cards as guaranteed

Make a small-note reserve part of the arrival plan: enough for the chosen first journey and modest incidental spending, with the amount set by your own arrangements rather than a generic holiday budget. Keep the rest of the money separate. Smaller notes reduce the need to find change immediately after arrival; they are a planning recommendation, not a promise that every counter will have them.

The State Bank identifies its notes and coins as legal tender, but that does not establish the payment arrangements of a particular ride. Before booking, ask the chosen driver or transfer operator whether cash is accepted and in which currency; confirm the amount and change needed. Check a card separately with its issuer and the merchant. No Russian-issued card, ATM withdrawal, wallet connection or verification SMS has been tested for this guide.

Distinguish a taxi meter from an app quote

At Da Nang airport, the official guide identifies taxi stands outside arrivals and a fare chart for listed routes; it advises asking assisting staff when a route is not listed. For a taxi outside that arrangement, establish whether the journey is metered or an agreed route price before setting off. Ask separately about tolls, airport charges, waiting and any return leg. Save the vehicle details and request a receipt.

If you choose to try an app, treat its use for your journey as optional and unverified. Check whether the displayed amount is an estimate or an agreed price, what it includes and how payment is made. Match the booked vehicle and driver before boarding, as Da Nang airport advises. A quote for a different destination or vehicle size is not comparable; confirm enough space for the passengers and luggage.

Treat the pickup point as a separate decision

Save the terminal and meeting instructions from your airline and confirmed transfer, then follow current airport signs. Da Nang airport tells passengers to specify the correct terminal and confirm the booked vehicle and driver. Our travel map uses airport reference points: it does not identify a pickup bay or terminal entrance. Do not walk toward a generic map pin while leaving a driver waiting at the agreed meeting place.

If the chosen booking method fails, ask the Da Nang airport information desk for help, or contact the hotel or arranging operator to ask whether it can confirm an alternative car. Assistance and availability at Cam Ranh have not been verified here. Keep the accommodation address and contact readable without data. A cash fallback only helps when acceptance, vehicle, destination and price basis are also agreed.

Separate travel data from the home number

Check the exact phone model, purchase region and carrier lock before choosing an eSIM. Apple documents separate voice and data plans and requires an unlocked iPhone to use different carriers. A family member having an apparently similar phone is not a compatibility check. If the device is unsuitable, compare physical-SIM or home-roaming options with the relevant provider rather than assuming an eSIM will install.

Keep home-number SMS and travel data as separate tasks. A data-only package does not provide a replacement number for ordinary SMS. Confirm home-operator roaming and charges, choose the travel line for data, and control automatic data switching. Leave the home line enabled only as your needs and operator terms require; neither dual-SIM support nor a signal icon guarantees delivery of a specific bank or taxi-app code.

Finish setup before the arrivals queue

Airalo asks for a stable connection for installation and distinguishes an installed profile from one that has connected and started a data session. Its help page says most validity periods begin on connection, but some begin at installation. Read the exact package policy for purchase, any scheduled activation and first network attachment; do not turn a general help statement into a rule for every Vietnam plan.

Save the provider instructions and support details, then follow its APN and roaming settings rather than copying settings from a different plan. Check calls, SMS, hotspot permission, usage limits and expiry before relying on the package. After arrival, test a small data task before requesting a car. Country availability is not a measured result at your hotel, and buying another brand does not establish an independent backup network.

Your next step

Make the decision concrete.

Before departure, save the real destination and transfer instructions, arrange a modest dong fallback, and confirm device and package settings. On arrival, verify the vehicle and data connection before committing to an app ride.

Practical questions

Should I buy an airport taxi if my package includes a transfer?

No. Follow the booked meeting instructions and keep the voucher offline. If the meeting fails, ask the airport information desk or the arranging hotel or tour operator for help before paying for a replacement.

Does a bank exchange-rate page prove that my cash or card is accepted?

No. A reference rate and currency list do not establish a counter transaction, card compatibility or cash availability. Confirm your actual notes, identification requirements, charges and net dong amount with the counter; check a card separately with its issuer and merchant.

Can a travel eSIM receive the code sent to my home number?

Not by replacing the home number. Keep the home line and its roaming arrangements separate from travel data. A package with data alone does not add ordinary SMS service, and successful delivery of the required code remains unverified.
