Unlimited Thailand eSIM data: fair-use limits, speed and hotspot checks
Unlimited data does not mean unlimited high-speed data. In Airalo’s policy observed on 3 November 2026, the default is 3GB of high-speed data per day, then 1 Mbps, with a reset every 24 hours from activation; package-specific exceptions can apply. Treat that as one provider’s rule, not a promise for every Thailand eSIM. Start with the exact offer’s speed policy and permitted use, then decide whether its daily allowance fits your trip.

Separate unlimited volume from usable high-speed volume
Airalo’s unlimited fair-use policy observed on 3 November 2026 says its packages have no fixed total data cap, but the default high-speed threshold is 3GB per day. After you use more than that threshold, speed is reduced to 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. A different threshold, if applicable, must appear in the package details before purchase.
This is a concrete Airalo policy example, not a rule for every unlimited Thailand product. Record the threshold, post-threshold rate and any initial speed restriction from the exact offer. True’s Tourist SIM terms describe both unlimited and fair-use benefits across different package types; that page alone is not a numeric speed schedule for the one you buy.
| Field to save | Airalo general policy example | Check for your purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Daily high-speed threshold | Default 3GB | Any package-specific exception |
| After the threshold | 1 Mbps for the rest of that day | Rate and separate network restrictions |
| Daily reset | Every 24 hours from activation | Actual start and displayed status |
| Permitted use | Personal, non-commercial | Intended equipment and sharing arrangement |
Find the reset clock before scheduling a large transfer
Airalo defines the daily allowance as successive 24-hour periods counted from activation. It is not stated as a universal midnight reset. Record your activation time and the provider’s displayed status, particularly if a large personal upload or download is planned near an important call.
Do not assume moving into another country resets a regional allowance or that buying another top-up changes an existing fair-use clock. Those are product questions to verify. You can schedule optional traffic around a confirmed reset, but should not try to bypass the provider’s network-management measures. Keep the package expiry separate from its daily reset.
Enter the actual fast quota, quota period and reset reference, separately from the package’s expiry. Sequence bulky tasks before critical calls only if your estimates leave an explicit reserve. A missing reset rule or reduced-speed figure should remain unknown, not become a calculator-generated assurance that the workday fits.
Model the high-speed reset window, not the label →Check both directions for a video call
Before a call, check upload as well as download from the actual place you will use. A published post-threshold rate is not a measurement of either direction at your accommodation, and it does not describe delay, interruptions or the behaviour of your call app. Do not treat the Airalo 1 Mbps policy figure as an HD meeting guarantee.
Use an explicitly hypothetical budget to expose competing traffic: with a 3GB high-speed allowance, setting aside 0.8GB for a download and 0.4GB for other traffic leaves 1.8GB before the threshold. These are planning inputs, not measured app consumption or a call-duration estimate. Count hotspot devices together, leave a reserve and defer optional transfers if the remaining allowance is uncertain.
A hotspot does not create another high-speed allowance
Airalo’s unlimited policy permits a personal hotspot and states no limit on tethering or the number of connected devices. That permission sits inside the same fair-use policy and personal-use scope. A laptop backup, tablet stream and phone traffic should therefore be budgeted together when they use that one connection.
Airalo’s general hotspot help also makes support conditional on the device and network, with package-specific APN instructions. Do not confuse a working hotspot setting with authorization to commercially share the connection. If several travelling colleagues need independent service, price and authorize that requirement separately rather than turning one retail unlimited package into an assumed team pool.
Read the allowed-use clause before planning work
Airalo’s unlimited policy describes personal, non-commercial use and prohibits reselling, redistributing or commercially sharing data with third parties, alongside unattended automated use and other misuse. True and dtac’s Tourist SIM terms prohibit commercial purposes and restrict use to mobile handsets, excluding routers and fixed devices.
For a work-first trip, ask the provider to confirm the intended calls, laptop tethering and team arrangement, or evaluate a service explicitly offered for business. Do not infer that occasional work is exempt because a plan has enough gigabytes. A business purchasing platform also does not automatically waive an individual package’s restrictions.
Choose fixed data when control matters more than the label
A fixed allowance can make a planned file transfer or intermittent backup easier to budget, while an unlimited plan can be useful for permitted personal use within its daily high-speed rule. Airalo says fixed package data is available across its whole validity period and can be consumed in one day. Compare those structures with your workload, not just the word unlimited.
There can also be slower performance before a fair-use threshold: Airalo says underlying networks may apply separate traffic management during busy periods and does not warrant connection speed or availability. True likewise says maximum advertised speeds are not guaranteed. Keep a fallback and avoid describing either product as uninterrupted work connectivity.
Your next step
Make the decision concrete.
Capture the high-speed threshold, reset rule, post-threshold rate and permitted-use clause before deciding whether unlimited data fits the job.
Practical questions
Is every unlimited plan limited to 3GB per day?
No. That is the default threshold in the checked Airalo policy, which also allows package-specific exceptions. Other providers and products can have different rules.
Does the daily high-speed allowance reset at midnight?
Airalo’s cited policy uses 24-hour periods from activation. Check the exact package rather than assuming a local-midnight reset.
Can I use an unlimited Tourist SIM in a router?
The cited True and dtac Tourist SIM terms prohibit routers and other non-handset or fixed devices. Choose and verify a service that explicitly permits the intended equipment.
Will 1 Mbps support my work call?
A policy rate alone cannot answer that. Check the actual call app, upload and download conditions, remaining high-speed data and a fallback. Lower-quality calling is not an HD performance guarantee.
