Working from Koh Samui: choose a desk before a data package
If Koh Samui is your first working base before Phangan or Tao, use that settled period to remove uncertainty from your setup. The decision is not which beach has the best reception. It is which bookable room or desk can pass your work test, with a lawful second connection ready before the first important meeting.

Compare properties with a work brief, not a speed slogan
Make a short brief describing the tasks you must complete: private calls, screen sharing, access to company systems and the heaviest necessary upload. Ask an accommodation whether internet reaches the exact room category, whether a desk is available and what happens if its main connection fails. These are questions to ask, not services we have verified at Samui properties.
If a seller supplies a test result, check its location and time. A reception-area measurement cannot establish performance in your room, and a result from an unused network does not show how your working path behaves. Keep noise, seating, power and privacy in the comparison. A faster connection in an unsuitable place may still fail your work brief.
Use a practice meeting as the acceptance test
Allow time after arrival to open your normal work applications and make a call from the intended desk. Test the actual laptop rather than substituting a phone-only result. Include the employer-required VPN, screen sharing and a representative file, within your organisation’s rules. Record what happened so the next test has a useful point of comparison.
Zoom’s published recommendation for a 720p group call is 2.6 Mbps upstream and 1.8 Mbps downstream. Those figures describe an application requirement, not measured Samui speeds or a guarantee of a successful meeting. Test conversation and screen sharing directly; a headline download figure alone does not show whether colleagues can hear and see you consistently.
Keep room Wi-Fi and mobile service as separate choices
Do not reject a room’s Wi-Fi just because you have bought an eSIM, or assume a Wi-Fi symbol means a usable connection. Try each available path separately and select the one that passes your work test. Check that the laptop has really switched between them; otherwise a comparison can accidentally measure the same connection twice.
For mobile working, the exact plan must permit the intended use. True and dtac’s Tourist SIM terms prohibit commercial purposes and non-handset devices including routers. Their handset-only rule does not establish permission for paid work through a phone hotspot. Choose an expressly suitable service or obtain plan-specific clarification before making it your office connection.
Use the same laptop and desk when comparing room Wi-Fi with a permitted mobile alternative. Save complete preflight observations with clear connection labels, and note any changed conditions. The Seoul samples are one comparison aid; the acceptance decision still needs the practice meeting and required sharing functions.
Compare the two setups at your Samui desk →A permitted hotspot still needs a laptop setup check
Airalo’s help page allows a personal hotspot where the device and network support it, and directs users to their eSIM installation details for any required APN. Apple similarly says Personal Hotspot needs carrier support. These are product and device conditions, not blanket permission for every plan sold under those names.
If your selected plan allows the use, connect one laptop first and check ordinary browsing before starting work. Save the settings that succeeded rather than copying an APN from a different package. On Windows, marking the hotspot Wi-Fi connection as metered can reduce background data usage; Microsoft notes that Wi-Fi is non-metered by default. Complete necessary updates on a suitable connection instead of simply disabling them indefinitely.
For a longer base, separate money balance from service validity
A longer Samui stay needs a continuation plan, not just an arrival package. True and dtac’s Tourist SIM terms cap validity at 60 days, specify that the packaging governs validity and say top-up cannot extend it after expiry. AIS’s tourist page describes identity reconfirmation for continued use beyond 60 days. These operator-specific processes should not be treated as interchangeable.
Record your package end date, any renewal or identity steps and the date you need the next connection. If a service is unsuitable for your working pattern, decide that before an important delivery week rather than attempting to stretch a tourist offer into a different product. Connectivity planning does not determine permission to work or remain in Thailand.
Put the final essential work session, not only checkout, into the activation timeline. Keep any documented identity or continuation action separate from the expiry calculation. The planner cannot establish renewal rights, so an unknown continuation rule needs provider confirmation before a long accommodation commitment.
Check entitlement across the whole stay →Leave Samui with a method you can repeat elsewhere
Before moving to another island, keep a small record of the working configuration: device, selected data line, exact package, laptop connection and required applications. Save support instructions and next-stop details offline. Reproduce the same test after arrival so a new room is evaluated on its own merits, not on the success of your Samui setup.
For the fallback, identify both the service and the physical device. True’s 2025 One Network announcement describes shared True and dtac infrastructure, so switching between those brand names is not proof of independent network protection. Another connection path and a relocation option can address different problems, but both need testing before you describe them as ready.
Your next step
Make the decision concrete.
Choose a Samui room or desk that can be tested against your actual work brief, and finish that check before committing your call-heavy days to it.
Practical questions
Can you recommend a particular Samui area for better mobile coverage?
Not from the evidence collected here. We have no comparable local measurements by area or room, so this guide recommends a property-level testing method rather than a neighbourhood winner.
Should I buy unlimited data before choosing accommodation?
First establish whether the plan permits your use and whether the accommodation connection can meet your needs. A larger allowance cannot repair an unsuitable workspace or grant permission to use a router.
What should I test before a client presentation?
Use the exact desk, laptop, connection, company access tools and presentation-sharing workflow. Confirm a second permitted path and decide where you will move if neither works.
