Rochester, New York students launch wireless network

A group of enterprising students in Rochester, New York will be launching a free wireless network that will be available in certain parts of the city by the end of this month. The Rochester Digital Ripple project, with help from the Rochester After School Academy (RASA), negotiated with the Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. to gain access to utility poles to set up equipment to beam WiFi signals. The city is still looking to develop and deploy a network, and a councilman was quoted as saying he expected "substantial" movement by the end of the year. Rochester is a major business area in upstate New York, so a wireless network here would certainly provide some advantages for its users.
